Dr. George Sampson Akpan
George is an accomplished petroleum and investment lawyer with many years of experience across industries and geographies.
George worked with Mobil Producing Nigeria (an affiliate of ExxonMobil) for many years and rose to the position of Senior Counsel. He also consulted for international organizations such as the World Bank and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). George was a visiting professor at the Aoyama Gakuin University, WTO Centre in Shibuya, Japan, the United Nations University, Japan and also served as an External PhD Examiner to the University of South Africa, UNISA. George held teaching positions in many universities worldwide, including the University of Uyo, the University of West Indies Bahamas LL.B program, Bahamas, Institute of Advanced Studies, United Nations University, Yokohama, Japan and University of New South Wales Australia. George is widely published in learned journals in the areas of foreign investment, international trade and policy.
George obtained his LL.B (Hons) degree from the University of Uyo and graduated as the best graduating student in law, a Master’s degree in Law (LL.M) from the University of Lagos. He also obtained a Master’s degree (LL.M) in Petroleum Law, Policy and Economics with distinction from the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy, University of Dundee, United Kingdom. He holds a PhD degree from the National University of Singapore in Foreign Investment Law and Policy and an Advanced Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
He is the Secretary of the Board of Trustees of Inoyo Toro Foundation, a Senior Partner with Georgid Consulting, Nigeria and Canada and sits on the board of many companies. George, a deep believer in God, is a widely travelled man. He has a deep passion for education and development and is married with three children. He loves music and football.
